Navajo Lake, NM

Everyone needs a break from now and then. After the Covid lockdown was over and travel became more of a thing it was time to get out and see the state. From Sup boarding to boating to fishing to a morning hike, there is a little something for everyone.

Being an avid tent camper it was different for me to reserve a spot. There were upsides and downsides. Let's start with some of the downsides. Being in a campsite there are reserved spots now that does not bother me. However this trip it rained most evenings so I would have liked the option to move around to find some high ground. There was runoff that pretty much ran directly into the campsite. Water puddled in the site so made limited places for tents. However, had we been in an RV or camper it would not have been an issue. The campsites are pretty close to each other so the littlest noise and you could hear it. But again its a reserved campsite so it's something to be expected. It was a fully booked weekend. The site had a few bathrooms, the downside to that is being next to them every one and their mom pretty much tried to walk through the camp to shortcut to get to them. The upside is they had flushing toilets and the showers worked and had warm water. The last downside would be the party animals that got placed in the neighboring sites. I'm all for relaxing wind winding down bit karaoke at 3 am is not something that I can get behind. The first night I kinda brushed it off. The second night was a bit much. Campside staff was for sure not making the rounds after 10 pm.

The upsides outweigh the downsides. The party animals didn't stop the natural 5 am alarm clock in my head. Getting up having the morning coffee then getting ready for the hike to the water for the sunrise. It wasn't that far. The water is surrounded basically by cliffs. So walking to the water was a nice hike and climb down the side of a cliff. You could see there was the start of a trail down to the water however with all the rain the runoff pretty much washed it away. Watching the sunrise was peaceful. Watching the hawks fly around was nice. After that, it was nice to go back grab some breakfast and get ready for the water sports. Every day started out the same way, coffee, and a great view.

After breakfast, it was a day on the lake. Between Sup boarding or boating there was always something to do. The 100 plus degrees was a bit much but the nice cool water was nice to jump in to cool down. The west side of the lake where the campsite seemed to be the place to be. It was busy and everyone was staying there. The other side had a campground called Simms campground. I think if I had to do it over I would probably stay over there. The fewer people and calmer waters would make for better Sup boarding. A day trip to fly fish the San Juan river would be great. You could also stay in one of the few campgrounds. Either way, the trip is well worth it. If you take a boat up the middle finger and if you have time you can head up to Colorado. All in all the trip was relaxing and enjoyable its recommeneded.
